Toshima Area Guide: Living in Tokyo's Dynamic Hub

Toshima Ward offers an exceptional blend of ultra-modern entertainment, rich subcultures, and nostalgic neighborhood charm. As one of Tokyo's most diverse residential hubs, it is a fantastic place to base yourself for a mid-to-long-term stay.

Sights & Landmarks

The skyline of Toshima is dominated by Sunshine City, a massive complex in Ikebukuro. On the 60th floor, you will find the Sunshine 60 Observation Deck "Tenbou Park," which was renewed in April 2023 to offer panoramic views in a park-like indoor setting. The complex also features the rooftop Sunshine Aquarium and the Konica Minolta Planetarium Manten.

For pop culture fans, Sunshine City is a paradise. NAMJATOWN, an indoor theme park by Bandai Namco, offers whimsical attractions. Nearby, the newly opened Chiikawa Park (opened in July 2025 in the Sunshine City Annex) is an interactive facility recreating the world of the popular character Chiikawa. The complex also houses one of the world's largest gachapon (capsule toy) stores, boasting over 3,000 machines.

Toshima's cultural landscape is split by Ikebukuro Station. The east side is a major hub for anime and otome culture, centered around Otome Road near Sunshine City. The west side offers a civic and artistic vibe, anchored by Ikebukuro Nishiguchi Park and its "GLOBAL RING" outdoor theatre.

Shopping

For a change of pace, head to the historic Sugamo Jizo-dori Shopping Street. Affectionately known as "Grandma's Harajuku," this vibrant 780-meter street is packed with around 200 stores. It specializes in traditional goods, Japanese sweets, rice crackers, tea shops, and lucky red underwear.

The street is deeply intertwined with local spiritual life. At the entrance stands Shinshoji Temple, home to a large Jizo statue. Halfway down, you will find Koganji Temple, which houses the Togenuki Jizo statue. Located just a five-minute walk from Sugamo Station (JR Yamanote Line and Mita Line), this street is a must-visit.

Food & Dining

Toshima's culinary scene is highly diverse. In Sugamo, the signature sweet is shio-daifuku (salted red-bean mochi), which perfectly balances sweet and savory flavors. You can find these freshly made at several historic confectioneries along the Jizo-dori Shopping Street.

Meanwhile, Ikebukuro is a legendary dining hub. During major local festivals, the culinary scene spills out into the open air, with local eateries setting up lively food stalls in Ikebukuro Nishiguchi Park, offering a delicious way to sample regional festival street food.

Getting Around

Living in Toshima makes navigating Tokyo incredibly straightforward. Ikebukuro Station serves as the ward's central transit hub and is one of the busiest stations in the world. It connects you via the JR Yamanote, Saikyo, and Shonan-Shinjuku lines, the Tobu Tojo Line, the Seibu Ikebukuro Line, and three Tokyo Metro lines (Marunouchi, Yurakucho, and Fukutoshin).

For a slower journey, Otsuka Station on the Yamanote Line keeps the retro Toden Arakawa tram line (Tokyo Sakura Tram) running through the ward, offering a scenic, relaxed commute.

Events & Seasonal Highlights

Toshima comes alive with community spirit during its annual events. One of the ward's biggest celebrations is the Fukuro Matsuri, running in two parts in autumn 2026. The Mikoshi Festival on September 27-28 features an opening ceremony, taiko drumming, and a mikoshi parade around the Ikebukuro West Gate (Nishiguchi) area.

The Dance Festival on October 11-12 showcases traditional dances like Kappore, Sado Okesa, and the Ikebukuro Yassa dance. This culminates in the 27th edition of the Tokyo Yosakoi Contest on October 10-11, 2026, held at Ikebukuro Nishiguchi Park and other venues.

Additionally, the Toshima Museum Rally 2026 runs from early August to late December 2026, offering a ward-organized stamp-rally style event across local museums.
